The Disaster Management Training and Education Centre of Africa at the University of Free State (UFS-DiMTEC) organized the second year contact session of its Master Programme on Disaster Management from 16 to 25 January 2012. UNU fosters growing partnership with University of the Free State in South Africa

From 20 to 21 October 2011, a delegation from the United Nations University Vice Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE) visited the University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa. The delegation, including Professor Jakob Rhyner, UNU Vice Rector in Europe/Director of UNU-EHS, discussed future collaborations between the two institutions and met with the national disaster management head and team of South Africa. Guest researcher from UFS-DiMTEC joins UNU Bonn team

Made possible through the cooperation between UNU and the Disaster Management Training and Education Center for Africa of the University of the Free State (UFS-DiMTEC) , Ms. Kehinde. E. Balogun joins UNU-ViE and UNU-EHS as visiting researcher . She is currently finalizing her Master thesis at UFS-DiMTEC. Until the end of October 2011, Ms. Balogun will work together with UNU-EHS scientists through a mentor/protégé relationship on her Master thesis. | Read more

From 16 until 27 May 2011 the Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa of the University of the Free State (UFS-DiMTEC) offered the second contact session of its Master programme on Disaster Management. A delegation of two representatives of UNU-ViE/UFS-DiMTEC (University of the Free State - Disaster Risk Management Training and Education Centre for Africa) visited Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of Congo, to meet with senior government officials and politicians from 8 to 15 August 2009. Congo Brazzaville Experts Trained in Disaster Risk Management in South Africa

A delegation of three interdisciplinary experts from Congo Brazzaville was dispatched to South Africa from 4 until 11 June 2009 where they attended, amongst others, the training course on “Disaster Risk Reduction and Vulnerability”, a UNU-ViE initiative organized by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and the Disaster Risk Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC) of the University of the Free State (UFS). The ultimate goal of the trainings is to establish a centre for disaster risk management and prevention in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. |Read more

On 30 April 2009, a decisive meeting between UNU representatives and an official delegation from the Embassy of the Republic of Congo including the Ambassador H.E Henri Dimi was held at the UN Campus in Bonn. The main goal of this reunion was to lead discussions on future collaboration links concerning the Congo-Brazzaville initiative as well as the potential establishment of a Disaster Management Centre in the capital of the Republic of Congo. | Read more
Congolese experts attend UNU-EHS risk management training

In November 2008, two government officials from the Republic of Congo followed a custom-made three-week training on risk management at UNU-EHS. The training course aimed at providing the Congolese experts with a holistic view on disasters as a consequence of deficiencies in development, inappropriate urban planning, poverty and other social issues. The course also emphasized on the modelling of processes which have led to such disasters, and concluded with examples on how these processes can be controlled. | Read more
