  <p>At a side event at the Basel Convention COP, StEP presented two white 
papers on its recent progress in the design of e-waste prevention and 
management systems and a world-wide harmonized definition of e-waste. 
These papers were endorsed by its more than 60 organizational members of
 StEP coming from industry, governments, academia &amp; research, 
international organizations and NGOs.  StEP also presented the capacity 
building capabilities of the successfully tested E-waste Academy for 
policy-makers, entrepreneurs and scientists.

  <p>320 tons of gold and more than 7,500 tons of silver are now used 
annually to make PCs, cell phones, tablet computers and other new 
electronic and electrical products worldwide, adding more than $21 
billion in value each year to the rich fortunes in metals eventually available through “urban mining” of e-waste, experts say.</p>

on scores of personal testimonies from refugees in Eastern Africa finds 
that climate change can make people more vulnerable and can also play a 
part in driving them into areas of conflict and ultimately across 
borders and into exile.</p>
